What parent doesn’t want their kids to listen and obey?

As a mom to three kiddos four and under, I find myself training my kids to obey on a daily basis. Obedience to parents is a command from God. It can be so hard to train because I often find my kids struggling with their own little sin natures.

Which is why I am always on the look out for new teaching tools to help my kids learn the importance of obedience!

Recently, when I was asked to review Nate and the Cake, I jumped at the opportunity because this is just the sort of book, I want in my kid’s hands!  (Yes, I received a free copy but the thoughts about the book are all my own.) And the message in the pages of this book clearly shares God’s desire for kids to obey God and parents.

What I Enjoyed About Nate and the Cake

Nate and the Cake is a simple book with a powerful message for kids.

Kid’s Point Of View

Sometimes, character training material comes at obedience in such a way that is sounds like it only benefits the parent, not the child. As a kid, I don’t want to hear that obeying my parents will make their life easier. Rather, kids need to know how obedience will directly affect them. Obedience will affect their relationship with their parents, their relationship with God, and even their own health and safety at times!

Kids Need To Know They Are Not Alone In Their Struggle With Obedience

Every kid struggles to obey. They aren’t alone in this struggle. However, at times, they can feel like it is their struggle alone. Reading books about other kids who struggle with this helps them gain perspective on their own struggles and equips them to deal better with those struggles.

Kids Desire To Take Action

Let’s be honest. Our young kids might not be ready for deep philosphy yet. They need easy, actionable steps to help them make the practical decision to obey us throughout the day. Nate and the Cake shares ways that kids can take actionable steps when they are faced with the temptation to disobey. (I won’t give away those actionable steps. You have to get the book to find out! 🙂 ) This book will help you talk with your kid about what to do when they want to disobey even though they know they shouldn’t!

Kids Need To Know God’s Word

The Bible is hard enough to confound scholars yet simple enough for a small child to understand. Our kids need to know that the Bible does call them to obey their parents. Obedience is an act of trust. As they learn to obey us, it shows a relationship of trust that is being built between us and our child. God designed this beautiful parent-child relationship and we need to nurture it!

Final Thoughts

I would definitely recommend Nate and the Cake if you are looking to add to your collection of character training reading material. It is a simple, Bible based picture book that can provide a launching pad for good discussions with your children.
