If you are like my homeschool family, we enjoy trying new curriculum as we decide what works for each child. Two years ago, we discovered the Generations homeschool curriculum while attending our state homeschool conference.

As our kids are leaving their toddler years rapidly, we have been experimenting with what works for each child’s different learning preferences. One curriculum that has stood out to us and modeled the values of our family is the Generations homeschool curriculum.

Use What Works

Quick side note to say that I am an affiliate to Generations homeschool curriculum right now but I would be willing to recommend these resources even if I was not an affiliate. There are several different programs we have tried and some have worked for our family and some have not. Generations is one that has served as a wonderful fit for our family so I want to share this review to help you decide if it might be worth a try for your family’s homeschool needs. 🙂

Generations Homeschool Curriculum Review

Here are the highlights that my family has discovered as we have studied and used the Generations materials. Remember our kids are young so I will speak to their young material mostly. As we grow up, I will try to remember to come back and update with new grade levels of curriculum!

Worldview Matters

For my husband and I the first question we ask as we consider using any curriculum is, “What worldview is portrayed throughout the coursework?”

Many curriculum companies will say they are Christian but other than a Bible verse printed randomly on a page, it reads like any other workbook we would find on the market.

Generations homeschool curriculum is written from a truly Christian worldview. The Bible is the foundation of all their course work. We have used their first grade math and their history curriculum so far and loved how the Christian worldview is laced through every lesson.

Each day, our daughter begins with the prayer at the beginning of the math lesson book. We finish our history reading sessions talking about the faith lessons that can be applied and find Bible stories that illustrate those faith lessons.

If you are looking for a curriculum that holds a high view of Christianity and weaves the Christian faith into all a child learns, Generations would be one to consider!

Quality-Literature Standards

As much as I would like to say my family follows one style of homeschooling, I admit we are leaning a bit to the eclectic. For my math curriculum, I am all about doing some workbook pages with hands on practice afterwards. (Something I am sure would make Charlotte Mason shudder in despair!)

When it comes to literature and the books we choose to use daily in our morning baskets and read aloud times, I am very Charlotte Mason-esqe. (Or at least so I have been told! ;))

What originally attracted us to Generations was the fact that they had some awesome books on their display table. We started by actually buying a few books for my husband and I to enjoy. Since that time, we have proceeded to buy many more of the their read alouds. It is without a doubt my favorite part of what Generations offer. Solid stories and amazing Christian biographies that give my kids heroes of the faith to look up to.

Plus, it has introduced my husband and I to many Christians from history that we hadn’t known about before our homeschooling years. We love when a curriculum keeps us all learning as a family!

Sound Academic Standards

Some curriculum companies seem like they are dumbing down their instructional programs anymore. There was one first grade curriculum we inspected last year that my husband and I both noted was incredibly too easy. Like closer to preschool work rather than first grade work.

While we don’t hold too tightly to grade levels, we do realize that in general our kids will be prepared for certain new learning challenges by certain ages. And we want to place work in front of them that will challenge them and cause them to grow into new abilities well.

Generations homeschool curriculum does not “dumb” down their topics. In fact, this is probably what I enjoy most about their history curriculum. We have been reading through it as a family rather than just completing it with my oldest daughter because we are all learning new information from it.

So far, our favorite was the history surrounding the Nicene Creed. As someone who didn’t grow up in a church that mentioned the Nicene Creed, I personally loved learning more. Recently my kids read their own copies of the Nicene Creed and were able to narrate the story of the events that led to the Council at Nicea. It was amazing!

And I will be honest, I think the kids appreciate the fact that the books don’t talk down to them but read in a fashion that realizes they are intelligent and able to sort through hard conversations and topics.

Affordable

Let’s be real, homeschooling can be expensive when you start to purchase all the curriculum.

So far, we have found that Generations homeschool curriculum is comparable in price or priced less than some of the other major homeschool companies. Plus, they have wonderful sales to help us go easy on our wallets while still having a well-stocked classroom.

Be sure to watch for their yearly Cyber Monday Sale. It is the best! Seriously, I set an alarm to remember to check it first thing on Cyber Monday. 🙂

Final Thoughts on Generation Homeschool Curriculum

Generations is a homeschool curriculum company that is still starting out and growing which is a lot of fun. Each year when I check back, they offer more which is awesome!

As with all curriculum, we have to decide what will work for each of our kids. What clicks for one kid doesn’t always click for the next one. If you are looking for a program that uses unique, Biblical approaches to standard academic topics, I certainly recommend you check out Generations.

Most of all, I will say your family could definitely benefit from their read alouds and literature. Even if you don’t homeschool, you should check out their book selections! They supply wonderful well-rounded, rich stories. Their books encourage kids to live godly life and learn valuable life lessons through the written word.
