Current Reads-God’s Crime Scene for Kids
Does anyone else get excited about teaching their kids cool new things about God and the Bible? Like not just normal excited but nerdy, way too crazy excited so you read ahead even if it will be several years down the road?
Nope. Just me. Good. Glad to know I am insane. 🙂
Okay, in full disclosure, I received this book as free gift from the author and publisher in exchange for a review.
For several years, I have followed J. Warner Wallace on Facebook and his books have been on my Goodreads To Read list for at least the past six years now but I have never actually read one of his books before now.
However, when offered the chance to check out the book for free, I jumped at the chance because I seriously did want to read some of his books!
Overview of God’s Crime Scene for Kids
First, this book is geared for kids probably in the age range of 8 to 12 years old would be my best guess. Much younger than that and I think they will start to struggle with the immensity of the concepts being discussed in the book. Also, the story line in the book will probably seem too “cheesy” to many teenagers even if it does help them understand the concept.
God’s Crime Scene for Kids is actually a story book where you follow a young man and his friends through detective school. Along the way through the captivating narrative, you and this young man, Jason, will explore the evidence for the existence of God.
In conjunction with this book is a website where parents or teachers can find videos and printable resources. While I did not go through ever single one of the videos and printables, I found the ones that I did see extremely impressive!
Overall, this is a very comprehensive course that a parent or teacher could use to aid their teaching about the proof for the existence of God.
My Personal Thoughts on God’s Crime Scene for Kids
Frankly, I was impressed.
First, I myself am a visual learner and the illustrations drawn throughout this book were tremendously helpful. If you have a child who learns by visual methods best, this material would definitely suit that learning style!
In addition, it is not only visual as far as actual pictures but also through word pictures as well. The comparisons and illustrations brought out in this story are wonderful!
Second, God’s Crime Scene for Kids is incredibly comprehensible. Obviously, for me as an adult it is a quick read but I believe that an established reader would not struggle with this book either. Honestly, I grasped some of the concepts addressed throughout the chapters better just by reading this book myself!
Finally, I appreciate that while this book does a great job of bringing it down to a younger reader’s understanding, they do not water down the truth of the Bible! There are very clear concise calls to surrender their hearts and lives to Christ and I find that to be the best point of all about this book!
The main critique I would have for this book/curriculum series is that it would require a little bit of organization for the teacher/parent.
Obviously, you can just use the book and get all the main stuff but if you really want to expand and do some of the cool stuff that kids will enjoy (such as making the detectives notebook pages, watching the videos, etc) you will need to bounce back and forth between the book and the website frequently.
Speaking as a Sunday School teacher, I do think that would be a tad frustrating for the prep work. However, it is still completely doable. Just be prepared to hop around a bit. (And be prepared to need access to the Internet…something that is harder in my rural church/area.)
Other than that, my only regret is that my kids are still several years away from being able to work through this material and I am so excited to do it NOW! 🙂
Check out God’s Crime Scene for Kids! See if it will work as a tool to teach your kids more about God’s Truth!
